An honest answer depends on the age of the unit and what has actually failed. A thermocouple, a tempering valve or an element is usually well worth fixing. A rusted-through tank at fourteen years old is not — you would be paying to delay the inevitable.
I will tell you which situation you are in, and if it is a replacement I will size the new unit to the way your household actually uses hot water rather than just swapping like for like. A family of five running out of hot water every evening does not need the same unit that was installed for the couple who lived there before.

How long should a hot water system last?
A standard electric or gas storage tank typically runs 8 to 12 years, sometimes a bit more with a sacrificial anode replaced along the way. Continuous flow gas units often reach 15 to 20. If yours is past ten and the tank itself has failed, replacement is almost always the better spend.
Can I get a rebate on a heat pump?
Victorian households can often access rebates and discounts for upgrading to a heat pump or solar hot water, particularly when replacing an old electric or gas unit. The programs and amounts change, so I will check what is current when we talk and factor it into the quote.
Can I replace a gas unit with electric, or the other way around?
Usually yes, but it is not always a straight swap — you may need new wiring, a switchboard circuit or gas line work, and the location may need to change to meet clearance rules. I will check all of that before quoting so the price you get is the price you pay.
